Published Jan 22, 2021The viral sea shanty trend on TikTok has proved lucrative for its shining star, Nathan Evans. The mailman from Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, has signed a deal with Polydor Records, thanks to his viral version of "Wellerman."
The 26-year-old has now quit his day job in order to pursue music full-time. He announced the deal in a video yesterday (January 21), expressing his excitement before he ran off to crack open a bottle of champagne.
"See how I was a postman on Friday? I have just signed to the biggest record label in the world," Evans announced on TikTok. "I have just signed a deal with Polydor Records. I've done it. It's done and I'm releasing a single."
The singer now has three singles live on his Spotify profile: "Wellerman," a remix of "Wellerman" and a song called "Throw It Away." Previously, the TikTok star teased plans for a new EP. So far, few details on that record have emerged, though it's safe to guess he will have even more shanty content on the way soon.
"I write my own songs and music too, but if people like the sea shanties and they bring a good amount of joy to people then I don't mind doing that," Evans told The Independent. "Music is an absolute passion for me, if it makes people happy then I'm all for it."
