K. Trevor Wilson's Deadpan Delivery of Some Gross Truths Delights Just for Laughs Just for Laughs, Montreal QC, July 22
Published Jul 23, 2019If there's one thing K. Trevor Wilson is good at, it's deadpan delivery — and that has never been more apparent than it was during his set at Just For Laughs on Monday night.
Wilson's set, Too Awesome, Too Fast, is named after the route the Letterkenny star took toward developing Type 2 diabetes at 350 pounds, after years of treating food "like a dare." "If you never say no to an idea, you'll get diabetes," he coolly warned the audience at Place des Arts.
His 40-minute set revolved around the things he's had to endure in the years since this diagnosis. In the last two years, he's lost 80 pounds, normalized his blood sugar and reversed his diabetes, and has many a gruesome tale to tell about how he did it. The majority of these stories are funny and relatable; he's had to endure eating "sour milk pudding" (yoghurt) every day for breakfast, for example, and he often gets advice from well-meaning idiots to "sprinkle some granola on there." (His response? "Go fuck a hat.")
Some of Wilson's tales from diabetes treatment ventured into the realm of gruesome. He claims he had diarrhoea for five years, and wasn't afraid to expand upon this in gory detail, nor on the suppositories he's given himself over the course of treatment for haemorrhoids. Albeit easy jokes for a laugh, the poop material seemed to enthral Wilson's JFL audience the most out of all of his material, evidence that the comedian knows his niche well. (He did, after all, offer up a scatological theme on his recent Netflix special, Talking Shit.)
After 15 years in the Canadian standup scene, a spot on a hit TV show, and many questionable choices, K. Trevor Wilson has learned a lot, and is ready to dole out sage advice for living life. With his straight-faced tone and delivery, he manages to make grim, embarrassing stories funny.
